Serekunda Market

Serekunda is actually nine villages that have grown together to form the largest city in Gambia, with a population of 337,000. 

Its market, a major tourist attraction, started with two women who sold fresh vegetables and dried fish alongside the dusty road. As more and more vendors joined them, the market became a maze of stands, some under roofs, some open-air. They sell dozens of different thing, including fresh food, locally-made souvenirs and batik by the meter; that’s the cloth most African women make their dresses and headscarves from.

We advise you not to buy feathers, ivory or anything made of animal fur, as it’s against the law to take them out of the country with you. You should visit the batik factory to see how the women draw, wax and boil the fabric to create their colorful designs. Batik is a product you may export.
