About Ousman
Ousman is the oldest son in his family, with three younger brothers and sisters. They live in Serrekunda, the largest town in Gambia and a few kilometers inland from the coastal resorts of Kololi and Kotu. After his father died, Ousman became the head of the family and their sole support. It’s his responsibility to make sure his younger siblings go to school, prepare themselves for good jobs and are able, someday, to support themselves.
Having studied history, Ousman knows a great deal about the history and culture of The Gambia. That makes him more than just a guide to the sights and sites. He’s honest, thoughtful and dependable, because he understands that it’s important for all Gambians that tourists enjoy their holidays, tell their friends and may even want to come back someday.
License and location
Ousman has a license and a permanent meeting place, so you can be sure he’s not one of the ‘hustlers and bumsters’ who prey on tourists. His stand is on Sunset Beach, and he’s there whenever he’s not off on an excursion. About 50 meters down the beach from the Sunset Hotel, you’ll find a group of blue-painted fruit stalls and a board advertising LOCAL ADVENTURES. Ask for Ousman the Ferry Man, and everyone will know whom you mean. They’re his friends, and they’re as helpful and friendly as he is.
If you’re planning a trip to The Gambia and would like to use his services, let him know via the contact page on this site. Then, on your first day in Kotu, you and he can decide which excursions and activities you’ll enjoy, and he’ll tell you what it costs.
Careful guide
We experienced to known Ousman as a good friend and very caring person. He does everything to give you the best possible experience.
This is very important to him because it is in the interests of all Gambians that tourists get a good feeling at Gambia and may return again one day.
By the way, a good tip: buy fish or meat, rice, potatoes etc. and enjoy dinner prepared on the beach. All this while enjoying the nice company of Ousman and his friends, african music (djembee), dances and a lot of gratitude afterwards. Ousman and his friends Karafa and Lamin only know how to make good food. There the restaurants could not stand up!
